2026 Club World Championship in Poland: Eight Teams, Four Continents, No Host Slot

For nine years behind a microphone in Da Nang, I have read hundreds of federation press releases. The one naming the eight teams for the 2026 FIVB Men's Club World Championship in Poland is one of the few that made me stop longer than I needed to. Eight clubs. Four continents. Not a single representative from the host nation.

People call me a shock merchant, but I only say what they have not dared to say: when a tournament called a club world championship is staged in Poland, confirmed to return to Poland again in 2027, and the entry list contains no Polish club, then what is being sold here is not local volleyball. What is being sold is broadcast rights and a long-term hosting agreement.

That is a fact I can verify, not speculation. The release states the tournament takes place in Poland, with ticketing and competition schedule details to be announced later. So the right question is not who wins, but what the FIVB is buying in Warsaw.

Eight names, four volleyball systems

The field includes Perugia (Italy), the reigning champions and the side that also won the CEV Champions League; Sada Cruzeiro (Brazil), five-time club world champions; Vôlei Renata (Brazil); Ziraat (Türkiye); Jakarta Bhayangkara Presisi (Indonesia); Foolad Sirjan Iranian (Iran); and Al Ahly (Egypt).

To me this is not a list of eight clubs. It is four volleyball schools placed side by side under one roof. European power volleyball — high balls, heavy hitters, thick blocks. South American balance and athleticism — where Sada Cruzeiro turn keeping the ball alive into a form of discipline. Asian speed and defence — where Jakarta and Foolad Sirjan live on low-error rallies. And the physical game of Al Ahly.

On format, previous editions used eight teams in two groups of four, followed by semi-finals and a final. That format rewards consistency over luck, because reaching the semis requires at least two group-stage wins against peers.

The Perugia gap, and the travel problem

Perugia arrive as reigning champions, with a squad packed with international stars including Oleh Plotnytskyi and Simone Giannelli. This is the kind of roster where you do not ask whether they reach the semi-finals, but who can stop them there.

But the largest gap in this tournament is not at the net. It is geographic. The South American, Asian and African clubs all fly to Poland. For Jakarta, Ziraat and Foolad Sirjan, this is a first or near-first encounter with world-level pressure. For Sada Cruzeiro, it is a familiar trip. The difference between familiar and first-time does not show up in a stat sheet, but it shows up in the fourth set of a semi-final.

Having tracked club-level tournaments for years, I have noticed an uncomfortable pattern: first-time Club World Championship entrants usually win one match, then collapse in the second because of thin benches. Not because they are weak. Because this tournament gives them no time to learn.

The most structurally significant detail is the presence of Jakarta Bhayangkara Presisi, the first Indonesian men's club to win an Asian continental title. For Indonesian volleyball that is a milestone sponsorship money cannot buy. The real value of a Club World Championship slot is not measured in title odds, but in the number of children in one country who see their hometown club share a court with Perugia. I have written before that the quiet numbers are the truth. This is one of them.

Where I could be wrong

I could be wrong in three places.

First, I am assuming the organisers have not handed a wild card to a Polish team. The release says further details will be announced later, so additional teams remain possible. If a Polish club is added, my entire argument about a hostless tournament collapses immediately.

Second, I am rating Sada Cruzeiro lower than reality. Five world titles is a number no non-European club has touched. Their knockout experience can beat a roster that looks better on paper.

Third, and this is the biggest risk: Perugia depend on Giannelli and Plotnytskyi. Lose either in the decisive phase and their system stops being a system. I made exactly this mistake once — trusting a defence only because of four clean sheets in qualifying, then watching it fold in two matches. Losing two sponsors in 2026 taught me that the truth still needs a nice coat; the second truth is that qualifying numbers say nothing about knockout pressure.

One more thing bothers me. This is a globalised club volleyball event, yet it sits apart from the local community hosting it. I have watched this pattern repeat across sports for years. One: if no Polish team is added, arena attendance in group-stage matches will fall well below matches featuring European clubs, and that will be the first sign of a tournament sold to television rather than to the stands.

Two: Jakarta Bhayangkara Presisi will not survive the group stage, but they will produce one moment — a set won against a big side — that Indonesia will repeat for years.

Three: Perugia reach the final, unless injury takes Giannelli or Plotnytskyi. If that happens, all my maths is worthless.

The ESFJ in me wants to please, but the hot-take in me chooses to wake people up. And the question I leave is not who wins. It is: if a club world championship can be staged for two years in a country that does not need its own team, what still holds the word club inside the tournament's name?
